sugar pie

...three years in the making.

TRINITY

...Is what happens when we feel like taking you to church. While our experiences and relationships with religion and spirituality vary, vulnerability and conversation allowed us to create something that tells an authentic story and transports you into our world... all while being a pretty dope ass song.

BUTTERFLIES

…Some songs take us a couple months to write but this one came to us in minutes (last summer) and just felt right. We spent the next year working on producing it to sound as good as we first felt when writing it. Special thanks to Sam Merkin or helping us with the foundation and inspiring the direction of the song! We love you guys and we hope y’all love Butterflies.

USER

...is our most experimental song yet. The driving soul-pop sound pays respect to the “King of Pop” and earlier works of the Jackson 5 while the production is inspired by the modern work of Dr. Dre in collaboration with Anderson .Paak. An alternate recurring section in ¾ takes inspiration from American jazz pianist Bill Evans and Stevie Wonder's lesser-known string work. The final and most sonically unique section of the song loosely collages sound ideas pioneered by Tyler the Creator, JPEGMAFIA, and The Temptations.

Bless your heart (Like shit)

… If you can, try not to bottle up your emotions. Be honest with yourself and with those around you about how you feel. Keep good people in your circle who care about you and want to see you succeed. Find an outlet, a release, a way to keep yourself balanced when life tries to throw you off. We love you.

fake fame

… is everywhere.

homage

… is our way of paying tribute to some of the many great musicians and artists that inspire us.  The dialogue within the lyrics is between us and the personification of music itself and we use that as a springboard to talk about more grounded subjects like relationships and healing.

SIDE EYES

… is what happens when you step into a room with Rey Larosa producing! This is the first of multiple collaborations between Awfbeat X Malrey. The song takes the listener through a brief exchange between a woman, whose perspective takes up the hook and the second verse, and a man, whose perspective takes up the 1st verse. As they talk their respective shit to each other, the listener is thrown into a HipHop and Latin-infused jam that’ll have you spilling drinks and stepping on shoes in no time.

BETTER THAN ME

… was conceived in a freshman dorm room on a cold ass February night in 2019. One of us felt inspired by a woman whom they had only known for about a week, and we swiftly agreed that this was the perfect topic to write our first commercial song about. We’re sure if you met someone who you thought was better than you in every way, you’d probably write a pop song about them too.
