Featured in the Netflix Original Boo, Bitch

SEASON 1 : EPISODE 3 - 19:15 to 20:15

ONCE UPON A TIME IN 2022…

We had the incredible opportunity to perform at our first ever festival, Music Midtown. We were overjoyed at the idea of putting on a show alongside some of our favorite artists such as 2 Chainz, Denzel Curry, and Redveil. Unfortunately, due to circumstances out of our control, the event had to be cancelled. We thank everyone involved for putting the safety of festival-goers first and don’t fret…. we all know the show must go on.

We laughed, we cried, we went harder than ever before (honestly tho)! Thank you @theatticpgh for having us, and to @calebkoptamusic@barlowlnmusic, and @awfbeat.official for probably the most fun we’ll ever have in an old church. We’ll be back next year with more shows, more great tunes, and more koozies to toss into the crowd.

2019 has been a big year for AWFBEAT, the musical duo consisting of Uni Hunte and Grant Glazier. The two sophomores have released two tracks on Spotify, “Better than Me” and “Side Eyes,” and amassed over 20,000 monthly listeners on the platform. They also opened for bülow at the Activities Board-sponsored concert earlier this month.

Hunte is originally from Harlem while Glazier is originally from D.C. The two artists’ paths coalesced when they met at a pre-college program here at Carnegie Mellon. There were no long-term expectations then. They simply created a group to make music over the program and expected to never see each other again afterward.

Fast forward to Orientation Week 2018. The two found out that they both lived in Stever and immediately rushed to see each other. Their complementary personalities and skills allowed them to take off with AWFBEAT from there. Hunte took over writing the lyrics, and Glazier filled in with the music production.

The name “AWFBEAT” may have been coined from a random word generator spitting out the words “off” and “beat,” but they have begun to attribute deeper meaning to their moniker. The deliberate misspelling of AWFBEAT’s name encapsulates the two’s desire to do something different or even something conventionally considered “wrong.” By naming themselves something that most artists aim to avoid or be otherwise skeptical to dabble in, the pair demonstrates that they aren’t afraid to go outside the norm.

Nino stretched moments out to perfection, and danced with a speed and clarity to his rhythm. Two magical moments were the teasing call and response between drummer Sergio Martinez and Nino's percussive flamenco, and Nino's joyfully improvised performance to the rap by AWFBEATS.

Listening to talented musicians amongst an engaged audience was a pleasure. Like the name suggests, Matisse Club seems to be a place where art comes alive. Once the house lights were on and the musicians had left the stage, I grabbed my phone. The first thing I did was to find the closest Flamenco class.

This was the opening of Nino de los Reyes' mesmerising performance at the Matisse Club, a sociable live music venue and bar in the young, student-y, 'Zona Cedro' area of town. This area is full of music venues, cafes, and bars all within walking distance of the Amistat-Casa de Salud metro. What sets Matisse Club apart - aside from the engaged clientele and colourfully lit bar painted with influential musicians - is the variety of music you'll hear there. Classical, jazz, soul, funk, salsa, K-pop and flamenco, all have a home there.

ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) - Music Midtown 2022 has been canceled. The festival issued a statement on social media stating the festival had been canceled “due to circumstances beyond [its] control.” It was originally scheduled for Sept. 17 and 18.

Artists confirmed with CBS46 that they were told by festival organizers the cancellation was due to gun safety concerns.

“What was communicated directly to us through various sources was because of gun safety,” said Uni Hunte with Awfbeat, set to make their Music Midtown debut in September.

Awfbeat said they got confirmation of the cancellation from Music Midtown on Monday morning.

“The initial reaction was disappointment just because we have been working on an incredible product we were excited to share with everybody,” said Grant Glazier, the second member of Awfbeat.

“But at the same time, we really do understand the reason for this decision and to know that it was a safety-based choice and that it’s like for the protection of us as artists, we 100% respect it and agree with the decision,” Glazier continued.

CBS46 also talked with 2 Chainz, who said he’d just learned of the cancellation on Monday

Hi Awfbeat, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?

“The most significant thing to note about our story is that we are unified by our love of music. Individually, Grant found his obsession through the sonics, instrumental complexities, and arrangements of a song, while Uni found his home in the lyrics, storytelling, and imagery that the artist presents to the listener. Despite our existence at opposite ends of this spectrum of appreciation, we realized that no one else we knew consumed music in the way that we do. We poured over every word, every production detail, and it took time for us to acknowledge how uncommon that was. When we reconnected after life had sent us in separate directions, we accessed that same mutual love for different aspects of music and harnessed it into creating songs together. The synergy within our process was so astonishing to us, that we couldn’t help but see what would happen if we kept activating it over and over and over again. Being true to our expression, communicating honestly with each other, and remaining present in our lived experiences has brought us to today.
